Annie E. Casey Foundation: Data Informed Strategies for Improving Policy and Practice
With funding from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Research and Evaluation Center (REC) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice is extending its program of research and technical assistance on juvenile justice realignment, or efforts to shift programs and resources for young offenders away from centralized, state-run facilities and into locally-operated, community-based, and non-residential programs.
The project began in 2010 when the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Probation asked the REC at John Jay College to summarize existing knowledge about justice realignment efforts and to address the potential for successful realignment in New York City and New York State. The Center began to review the research literature and compile the results of previous studies and investigations. This effort was supported further in December 2010 with $30,000 in funding from the New York Community Trust.
In January 2011, the Annie E. Casey Foundation then invested an additional $150,000 to support a more thorough investigation of justice realignment strategies and to assist in the Foundation’s data-informed strategies for  juvenile justice reform in other state and local jurisdictions.
